Day 13/Final Day of Experiment

Day 13

Today, was the last day of collecting data as in terms of observations, it was quite the same to that of Day 11.. After taking note of these observations,
 - I removed the nail from its solutions,
 - cleaned it with water and steel wool
 - weighed the masses of these nails and recorded it

These were the masses of the nails on Day 13

Following this, I

 - Disposed of the solutions
 - Cleaned all equipment used and dispose of the plastic cups.

On the day I had taken pictures of these but ultimately, the memory card of my camera went corrupt not long  after. Therefore no pictures could be posted here showing myself doing these activities (100% Truth-Swear!  :P

After all these deeds had been done, i went to  organize the data collected and began the write-up of my report

Day 11

Day 11
Solution perhaps from the start compared to the end, have turned a darker orange  colour as perhaps more rust has accumulated and therefore, contributing to the darker colour. Observations made note of day 4 in terms of the “ranking” of the amount of the rusting has stayed the same

An image of the colour of the solution after the rust had been stirred with a sitrring rod

Day 7

Day 7
Again, following the same trends as from Day 4 and 5 where the colour of the solution has stayed the same but more rust has seemingly so become more apparent. Observations made note of day 4 in terms of the “ranking” of the amount of the rusting has stayed the same.

Again, the comparison of the 0.65M Nails with the 0M: it can be seen that the nail in the 0.65M has slight more rust evident on the nail

Day 5

Day 5
The colour of the solutions have stayed the same, however yesterday rust came off of the nail and floated in to the bottom of the solution when I was taking observations. Today, it is noticed that new rust has formed however on the actual iron nail indicating that further rust has occurred. It is noticed that the nails in the 0.65M solution has rusted slight more than the nails in the other concentrations such as the nails in water.

An overview of the experiment and the solutions/nails

Comparison of the Iron nail immersed with 0M to the nail immersed in 0.65M: more rust can be seen to have  formed on the iron nail on the right (0.65M)

Day 4

Day 4

Over the weekend, all solutions of the Iron Nails have turned a darker orange/light brown of solution with plenty of rust evident all the nails and in the sodium chloride solution. The only minor difference is that more rust is evident in the nails and solutions of  certain concentrations than others

The solutions and nails with the 0.65M concentration appears to have a little more rust than the other concentrations. Also as expected, the nails and solutions with the 0.85M solution did not rust faster than the other concentrations solely due to the fact that it had the highest concentration of salt. It was spotted to have roughly the same amount of rust as the nails and solutions of the 0.45M and also possibly the 0.25M solutions as well. The iron nails and solutions of the 0M concentrations although not by much, was spotted to have the least amount of rust.

Solutions have turned a browner orange indicating the some iron Fe2+ has rusted into Fe3+

Comparison between the rusting of a nail in a 0.45M solution and a nail in 0.85M solution: So far it looks to have rusted the same amount which so far is verifying the hypothesis

Comparison of the Rusting between a nail immersed in O.65M of Salt and 0M of Salt
The nail on the left (0.65M) can be spotted to have rusted slightly more than the nail in 0M

Preparations Day 2/Day 1

Summary of Activities:
Today, I made the remaining salt solution yet to be made (0.85M) and had poured these into the reaming cups. Today I had also used cotton wool to clean all the rust all the nails. Once all the nails were cleaned, I weighed up the Nails recording the masses. The Recorded Results are shown below:

Weighing and Recording the Masses of the Nail

Output of the Day: Experiment is Set up with all the Nails (rust free and weighed ) left in the water/solutions. Experiment has Begun!

Preparations Day 1

Preparation Day 1    13th Feb, 2013

Summary of Activities
Today, I gathered all my materials(ie iron nails, beakers, measuring cylinders)  for my experiment as well labelled the cups. In addition to this, I had also made 4 (0M, 0.25M, 0.45M, 0.65M) of my 5 solutions (600ml) and had (200ml) poured these into their 3 respective concentrations cups. To make the solutions mentioned, I collected 8.766g, 15.7788g, 22.1916g respectively.

Set Up of the Preparation of the Experiment. The Labelled Cups, Measuring Cylinder with Water, Iron Nials as well as the Sodium Chloride

Making the Salt Solutions: Stirring the Rod so that the salt dissolves faster into the water in the Beaker

The Outcome at the End of the Day: 4 of 5 solutions that were made had already been poured into the Cups
